Senior Director of Development

Description

The Senior Director of Development leads strategy and execution for major and leadership giving. This role is responsible for building strong donor relationships, growing philanthropic support, and managing a portfolio of prospects and donors to help achieve the organization’s fundraising goals. The Senior Director works closely with leadership, board members, and colleagues across the development team to strengthen donor engagement and advance the mission. The Senior Director of Development will be a key leader on the development team. They will help guide development strategy, annual development plans, and enable other members of the development team to expand their knowledge of fundraising best practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement a comprehensive mid-level, major, and leadership giving strategy that supports annual revenue goals and long-term donor growth. Manage and grow a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the capacity to give $1,000+ annually, including qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Lead efforts to grow the 92 Circle for $1,000+ donors and establish future giving societies to recognize other significant groups of donors (e.g. planned giving donors). Assign and follow donor portfolios for the CEO, Chief Development Officer, and as appropriate, other donor relationship managers including colleagues from the development team, board members, and other CIS-GTC staff. Partner with executive leadership and board members to support donor engagement and major gift conversations. In collaboration with the Director of Annual Giving, design and oversee donor communications, appeals, and stewardship activities to strengthen retention and increase giving. Analyze fundraising performance, donor trends, and portfolio activity to inform strategy and improve results. Collaborate with marketing, programs, finance, and operations teams to ensure accurate reporting and compelling donor messaging. Maintain accurate donor records, revenue projections, and activity tracking in the
organization’s CRM or donor database. Represent the organization professionally in donor meetings, events, and community settings.
 Help build a high-performing, mission-driven fundraising culture.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or Senior Director of Development ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience. Five or more years of progressive fundraising or development experience, including individual donor cultivation and solicitation. Demonstrated success in closing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals. Strong relationship-building, communication, and presentation skills. Experience working with donor databases or CRM systems and using data to guide strategy. Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and collaborate across teams. Commitment to the mission, values, and ethical standards of nonprofit fundraising. Experience working with board members and volunteer fundraising leaders. Knowledge of annual giving, major gifts, moves management, and donor stewardship best practices. Experience in a nonprofit organization of similar size or mission focus.
