Fighting the school-drop out rate continues to be one of Tarrant County's top priorities and one of its most challenging problems. Young people without diplomas are the last to be hired, the first to be laid off, and often the last to be rehired. Statistically, they’re more likely to be involved in criminal activity and more likely to be incarcerated. They’re more likely to rely on public assistance, and they’re more often uninsured. As parents, they are less likely to expect their own children to graduate, thus perpetuating the cycle. It is evident that failing to complete high school impacts the whole community.
Why Is CIS Needed?
Locally, fewer than six in ten students entering the ninth grade graduate four years later.
“Each student who leaves school without a high school diploma costs Texans over $227,000 in forgone income, lost tax revenues, and increased job training, welfare, unemployment and criminal justice costs.” |
